Zip It

Kate Cusack has been creating zipper jewelry out of Brooklyn, NY, since 2003.  In an odd way, it reminds me of the suction cups on tentacles.

“In art school,” Kate explained, “I realized that once you allow yourself to use materials in unconventional ways, then, just about anything is possible. It’s ironic that most fashion designers try to hide or disguise zippers in their creations. However, I love zippers’ shiny metal teeth and I want to show off, not hide, their sparkle and their sinuous flexibility.”

Her online portfolio is full of zipper jewelry, costume design, and enormous wigs.  Visit her Etsy Shop to purchase the zipper jewelry directly from the artist, or any of these retailers.

I love the little black zippered flower. Her wrist cuffs are pretty awesome too.

Wait till you see the costumes for the Tempest, By Julie Taymor. Most of them are made with a similar, zipper-manipulating idea.

Kate Cusak’s stuff is really great, I love the bracelets made from circles.
