Japanese Goth

goth533
After the success of Shoichi Aoki’s 2001’s Fruits, I figured it wouldn’t be too long until we had a good picture book of Gothic Lolita style in hand, too. I was wrong. Fruits was followed by Fresh Fruits, and it was cute but still mostly focused on kids that made candy ravers look understated. A few more books have tried since then, but honestly I just haven’t been impressed. However, with the few pictures that are hitting the web of Tiffany Godoy’s upcoming Japanese Goth, I suspect my long wait is over. This book looks absolutely gorgeous! Due out next month, the 240-page photographic foray into the subculture promises to be eye candy at least.

I’m sad to say that finding the Fruits magazine at in inapprotirately young age influenced most of my middle- and high-school clothing choices. Gugh.

I’m certain I’ve seen a Japanese goth-centric book that’s almost identical in set-up as the Fruits compilations. Of course, it’s just a vague-ish memory now, so I’ll just have to sit back and wait for Japanese Goth to come out!

I had the pleasure of meeting Tiffany at the Subculture and Style symposium in NYC last month, and indeed from all the excerpts I saw, her book promises to be quite the aesthetic visual feast!

“Japanese Goth” has been around since the 80’s. It’s been in magazines for ages already, it’s about time they came out with a book about it.

  4. Andrea Schwartz Says:

Have you seen the Goth & Lolita book out? There’s a lot of lolita (frilly victorian inspired dresses- some goth and some not) but there’s also a lot of well, gothic and clubbing outfits too.
(I’m really looking forward to getting the Japanese Goth book too of course!)

  5. Samantha Says:

@Andrea – I’ve seen it! They actually keep a copy in the waiting room at my hair salon, so I’ve flipped through it a few times.

  9. Alice Says:

@ Andrea & cherry- Yes! I knew Phaidon had one about some facet of Japanese goth clothing that was similar to the Fruits books!

  10. simi Says:

Oh yes, I’ve also seen the Gothic Lolita book that cherry mentions up there! I think it’s published by Phaidon Press.

Interesting that the picture you posted is Kaya, a japanese Solo Singer/Artist, former vocalist of the Band Schwarz Stein…

Is that a random coincidence or is that picture actually from the book?
