Good News, Hot Chick
As of yesterday, two days of meetings of the International Whaling Commission failed to lift the ban on commercial whaling. While some states continue to slaughter whales and dolphins outside the ban (notably Japan, Iceland, and Norway), this is still great news. And if you haven;t seen the video yet, Alice Delial does a fine Lori Petty impersonation.

I’m not sure it’s quite so clear. At least in this article: http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,701835,00.html – the author says the point of lifting the commercial ban is to bring the current Japanese/Norwegian/Icelandic whalers who ignore the ban into an international agreement with very restrictive kill allowances. That new agreement would drop the number of whales killed and eventually phase it out entirely.
I don’t know if it would *work*, but it’s not just lifting the ban for no reason.

People “slaughter” many different animals for meat daily. I don’t think any creature should get special treatment over the other, it is all equally abhorrent and disgusting. I honestly don’t see how whaling is any more horrifying than the meat or (even worse) the racehorse industry.
Useless trivia: Orca/Killer Whales (everyone’s favorite) aren’t even whales, they’re actually in the dolphin family.

I agree completely! I despise people with this double standard that it’s so wrong to kill whales, but go on eating beef, pork, and chicken sourced from factory farms, which is much crueler in practice than letting whales live in the wild and then catching them. Like you, I’m not condoning whaling, but it’s pretty hypocritical of humans to pick and choose which animals’ lives are “valuable”.
