Phantasmagoria | Haute Macabre

Marilyn Manson’s directorial debut as a feature filmmaker  (yes, we can all collectively snicker) includes Lily Cole, Evan Rachel Wood, Tilda Swinton, Angelina Jolie, and himself in Phantasmagoia : The Visions of Lewis Carroll.

Victorian England.  A haunted writer in an isolated castle is tormented by sleepless nights and visions of a girl named Alice, following the death of his father in 1869. He finds himself becoming a symptom of his own invention. “Now all my nightmares know my name.”

He is Lewis Carroll. Terrified of what waits for him each night.

Although a release date has not yet been stated, the trailer was released this past spring.

  1. Huh. I’ve heard him mention something about getting into film .. forgot when the interview was. Trailer looks interesting. Looks like an interesting .. er, Marilyn-Manson-y film.

Too bad it might have been abandoned. Maybe he’s gunna surprise us.
.. And it’s no surprise he used Evans Rachel Wood. *sulks in corner*

  2. This HAD to have been leaked, as there were several things in that trailer that I’m fairly sure aren’t legally allowed to be shown in a movie trailer in America, unless this was released on late night HBO.

But I love MM anyway, so who cares. This looks intriguing if nothing else.

  3. Tim Burton did it worse.

But, seriously, people who act like they’re the penultimate experts on Charles Dodgson (only uneducated plebs call him Lewis Carroll, of course) and Alice in Wonderland piss me off just as much as the bandwagon fangirls and misinterpretations that they whinge on about.

Just let people enjoy and interpret his life and works.

As far as Manson goes, this is pretty toned down compared to some of his over-the-top music videos, so I don’t know what people are on about a man who has burned Bibles onstage as “trying too hard”.

  4. That trailer was created in 2006 and was never supposed to be released for public viewing. Manson personally requested that the person who leaked it own up to their actions as the artists behind it weren’t ever consulted. The film isn’t ever going to happen. People need to get their facts straight concerning Phantasmagoria.

  5. *snerk*
god, i love misconceptions about charles dodgson.
my thesis is about victorian literature, so i know my lewis carroll.

  6. I think Connie might be right and this film isn’t destined to see the light of day. If you look at the end of this trailer you will see that its copyright date is 2006

  7. so um… I did a quick wikipedia search on his “pedo” rumor.. and it offers some insight that it might have just been a misunderstanding of the society he was in. (Apparently, they celebrated child nudity.. to a point they put photos of a naked child in christmas cards… um… yeah, don’t ask.) He might have been just a friendly gentleman who connected with children… although… um… that might mean different things…

  8. I’ve heard about it in the works, but thought it had been abandoned since it’s been so long. I’m actually impressed. I think it brings back a lot of scenes from the psychological thriller movies/games (Jacob’s Ladder, Session 9… Silent Hill, the game series) It is slightly disturbing since Lily Cole looks so innocent here… but I imagine it’s supposed to be disturbing. There have been speculations that Caroll was um… had er… pedo tendensies… though from my understanding, he didn’t act on much because of the social views. I think the movie is trying to portray that in a serious manner that is almost relatable. Either way, Angelina Jolie is in it! 😀 <-haha)

  9. I was really excited for this when I first heard about it a few years ago. After seeing the trailer though, not so much now. It looks like a thinly veiled excuse for Manson to get Lily Cole naked.

  10. I heard about this the first time the project was announced a few years ago, but I’m doubting whether it’ll ever get made and released since it’s been so long. Hadn’t seen that trailer though.
