Japanese painter Fuyuko Matsui’s work, focused on the supernatural and the grotesque, draws on long deeply rooted Japanese tradition both for her artistic style and her eerie imagery while pulling in a bit off Western-style anatomical illustration and just a dash of big-screen Tokyo horror. Pulling themes and characters from folktales and stories, her landscapes are populated with ghosts and witches, deformed beauties, and raving madwomen.
