Hair Today: Going Gray

 Kristen McMenamy

Led in large part by model Kristen McMenamy’s signature silver mane, a quiet revolution in hair color seems to be taking place. While many of us have been busy hiding our gray roots for years (personally, I started seeing silver around 16),  the younger crowd seems to be  embracing gray hair- even dyeing their hair to achieve it.

You know, if I could figure out how to give it a shot without several years of  hideous  roots, some of these images are enough to make me at least curious.

  1. I am embracing every shiney grey/white hair coming through my darkest chocolate brown mane 🙂 I think they are pretty highlights of wisdom 😉 I’m hoping I’ll go snowy white like my late maternal grandmother. So far so good. Each hair seems to be white rather than grey. I think grey/white hair works well on people of colour. It might be the contrast and it could be that darker people’s skin tends to age better (built in sun protection!).

  2. I like LaRiche’s silver toner; it actually deposits some color.

Clairol Shimmer Lights conditioner is awesome for easy maintaining. I’ve also used it as a toner with good results.

  3. I got a nice gray color from putting Feria Bright Black ( the blue-black one) on bleach-blonde hair and letting it fade (and it fades very fast, as anyone who uses it knows.) Not exactly something one could maintain, but I enjoyed it.

  4. Frustratingly it is also a difficult look to achieve. I
generally dye to a pale lilac which fades to silvery-blonde over
blonde foils but I haven’t found a good grey dye (some try to
explain it can’t exist but that is silly, of course it is possible
but perhaps it is not available as it is not manufactured). If
anyone has a decent suggestion on how to achieve that last look
    please do tell.

  5. I think the problem is that naturally gray hair looks
nothing like most of these pictures, except maybe the first one.
I’m very sick of dying my roots, but I soldier on.

  6. The irony is of course that grey hair looks fine with young
unwrinkled faces… as someone who recently had a dye go horribly
wrong and had to use a dye stripper, I have just seen my real
colour for the first time in 30 years and there is NOTHING more
ageing than grey hair with a 40+ face! Eeeek… I definintely will
    be dyeing again
