Ask the HM Hivemind: Plain Black Leggings

Plain Black Leggings. They are a staple of the modern wardrobe. But I’ve had some trouble finding some that met my criteria:

  • Genuinely opaque (seriously, legging makers. If I can see the color in my thigh tattoo, you’re doing it wrong).
  • Warm enough for winter wear. I only live in San Francisco, it’s not like it gets below freezing.

So, having no luck of my own, I asked our Facebook followers for their favorites.  Here’s what I learned:

“C9 by champion work out leggings at target! By far the best and I wear them everyday!”

-Kaileigh

C9 by Champion workout leggings. $24.99, available from Target. These were  the most affordable leggings to make the list.

“I found leggings used by runners with Fleece lining to be the best. You can get them almost everywhere now.”
-Tera
Fleece lining was a commonly mentioned factor for both warmth and opacity. Pictured above: Plush Fleece Lined Leggings, $30, by Otte

“Spanx was making 100 denier tights earlier this season. I have their 70 denier options that are waist high, and close to opaque but not total, and they are brilliant for keeping the midsection warm, which makes everywhere else feel a bit warmer.”
-Erin
The most expensive leggings on the list- but also the most mentioned- were the various Spanks leggings. Pictured above, Look-At-Me Leggings, $72.

I was having the same issues myself earlier this year. Then
I came across this tutorial and OMG who knew that leggings were so
    easy to make?

Once the pattern was drafted, I could knock out a pair in under an
hour. My favourites at the moment are ones that go straight down
from the knee to go over boots. To. Die. For. Rxx

My absolute favorite leggings are by a brand called “Cute Girl”. I have no idea where I bought them, but they fit perfectly, the waist is comfortable (not too high, not too tight), they’re opaque, and basically perfect in every way (though not SUPER thick for winter, but…still.)

I desperately need a new pair; unfortunately googling “Cute Girl leggings” is about as useful as you would imagine.

BRANDING, UR DOIN IT RONG. Siiiiigh.

You can’t go wrong with American Apparels winter leggings.
They are the warmest thing ever and they last an age.

You can see through those leggings by Otte! Look carefully at the top. Do not wear as pants.
