In the wake of the horrific events in Charlottesville, it seems like the time to take a break from posting the pretty things, and spend a minute on the ugly stuff.
White supremacy cannot continue. It has to go. Things have to change.
We have to change them.
If you are anything like us, right now you’re veering wildly between anger and fear, between a need to do something right this moment and not knowing what that thing even is. Therefore, we’ve put together some suggestions and resources to channel that energy.
1. Join a March or Protest. Even if you never have before. Get out there and take up some space. Be seen, be heard, be counted. Here’s a great list of upcoming Anti-Nazi rallies from Uproxx.
2.Donate. Many local marches need money for things like porta-potties, sound system rentals, and security- you’ll usually find a ‘donate’ button on the Facebook page for the event. Donate to anti-hate groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center, to groups that support minorities causes like Black Lives Matter or NARF , or directly to help vulnerable communities through programs like Food Not Bombs.
3.Educate Yourself about Race and Racism. Go read some stuff. You could start here. *Note to the white readers- please do not rely on the people of color in your life to walk you through this. They’ve got other stuff to deal with right now.
Get Angry. Get sad. Finally tell your racist uncle why you stopped coming over for dinner. Do whatever you can, however you can. But do it today.
