Born Luisa Adele Rosa Maria Amman in 1881, Marchesa Luisa Casati was the aristocratic darling of the wealthy Italian bohemian set. Married but prone to extravagant love affairs and with a penchant for art, fashion, exotic animals kept indoors, and the occult, Luisa was a woman ahead of her time. Her pale skin and dark makeup, over-the top accoutrements and androgynous leanings inspired generations of fashion forward women. Her biography, Infinite Variety: The Life and Legend of the Marchesa Casati , is worth a read. She wore live snakes regularly, and was known to take her pet cheetah for a walk while wearing nothing at all under her fur coat.
