This winter welcomes an incredible exhibit to the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC : Death Becomes Her: A Century of Mourning Attire.
Exploring the aesthetic development and cultural implications of mourning fashions of the 19th and early 20th centuries with approximately 30 ensembles, it reveals the impact of high-fashion standards on the sartorial dictates of bereavement rituals as they evolved over a century.
Death Becomes Her opened this week, and will be running until February 1, 2015. The MET has been incredibly generous to share with Haute Macabre the full series of images of the show’s incredible pieces for those of us unable to attend in person. Accompanying the exhibit is a full range of jewelry in the fashion of the era available in the museum gift shop.
