Ensemble of Shadows

Sopor Aeternus & the Ensemble of Shadows has been around as long as I can remember, always busy being weirder than the next band, living somewhere in the space between Diamanda Galas and a terrible nightmare you had after eating dodgy fish and watching Brahm Stoker’s Dracula. Lead singer Anna-Varney Cantodea is one of those incredibly visual people who has always chosen to forgo mundane ideas like ‘pretty’ for something more like ‘otherworldy’ and ‘alien’.

What interests me currently is Cantodea’s transformation as she ages. After all, she was DEATHROCK AS FUCK when I was still listening to Cyndi Lauper, and she shows no signs at all of slowing down. Instead, she’s just become the best witch ever. #Squadgoals, y’all.

  1. Oh, Sopor Aeternus has been around forever! It’s one of the most visually impacting “Inspirators” I know, and I have always adorned her funeral style paired with creepiness, interest, edge and historical connotations. It’s time I refer to S.A. more often in my own style again, yes it is!

  2. I love her hair. I’m constantly tempted to shave more of my head and/or ditch my bangs for something more like Yolandi Visser’s super short clipped front, but that might be pushing it even in my very relaxed work environment.
